Contact your Legislator
Contact your Federal, State, County and Local Elected Officials
An email, phone call, letter, facebook note, twitter – any way you can, please contact your elected official and ask that they take action to reduce the nutrients/algae in Lake Erie.
You can also ask that Ohio get involved with the Detroit wastewater permit up for review in Michigan in April 2012(the Detroit wastewater plant’s discharges are over 5% of the phosphorous in Lake Erie); ask for a ban on fertilizer(including manure) on frozen ground and ask for an end to open Lake dumping of Toledo shipping channel sediments. All of these contribute to the algae problem.
It would also help if there were continuous monitors for phosphorous, nitrates, and oxygen at the mouth of the Detroit and Maumee Rivers to get first hand data on the volume of phosphorous and nitrates coming into Lake Erie. The Maumee and Detroit Rivers contribute over 80% of the phosphorous to Lake Erie – each over 40%.
For a sample resolution that governments and organizations can adopt and send to Governor Kasich and the Ohio legislature click here.
